What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Doctors are government recognized general practitioners with special training in Natural Therapies. They are fully trained in the conventional medical sciences, pathology and diagnosis similarly to medical doctors (MDs) but they are also trained to recognize and treat functional conditions that may accompany, precede or be a consequence of a disease.

Naturopathic Doctors (ND’s) use therapies including Nutritional Education & Therapies, Botanical Medicine/Herbs, Homeopathy, Physical Medicine, Counseling, Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine. NDs focus on treating Individuals, not their labels/diagnoses.

Not only do Naturopaths take the time to look at the whole person; physically, emotionally, and psychologically, they take the time to look at how that patient’s nutritional status, stress, genetics, potential toxicity and other factors may be contributing to their particular disease/condition, affecting their health and compromizing how they feel.

After taking all of this into account, NDs use approaches that are best suited for each patient toward achieving their individual goals. Initial visits are thorough and typically include reviewing the full history of a patients presenting concern, past medical history, review of relevant lab work, and physical examination.

The goal of our medicine is to identify, address, and treat the root cause of disease, not simply to suppress the symptoms.

Naturopathic medicine is effective in treating many if not all health problems whether Acute or Chronic. Naturopathic physicians cooperate with all other branches of medicine, referring patients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate.

How many follow up visits are usually required ?

The number and frequency of follow up visits depends on the individual patient case, however most patients are asked to come back within 2-3 weeks for a first follow up in order to assess progress and make any changes if necessary. A second follow up visit may then be done 4-6 weeks after this. In some cases, patients may choose to see Dr Holewa more regularly if complex nutritional coaching, IV therapies or counseling make up part of the plan however all options will be discussed with you (the patient) so that you can decided together what the best approach is depending on your individual needs.
